pointless conversation [poem]

image

there are a million things I’d like to ask
but I stick to how’s your day
because that’s a shallow question with easy answers
I don’t ask if you
remember my fingers running through your hair
as the sun cast dappled light on us
through the tree branches
I don’t ask if you
let her wear your things
wrapping her in pieces of fabric
that have long forgotten the heat of my skin
I don’t ask if you
told her your favorite song
the one that hurts
just right
and leaves you feeling vulnerable
as the first notes play
I tell you I’m fine and change the topic
to last night’s rain and other mindless things
you nod like you’re listening
but you’re already checking out of this
pointless conversation
