unfinished business [poem]

image

you and I will always be
unfinished business
a puzzle left half done on the coffee table
pieces scattered across the living room floor
carelessly
the way we always approached each other
never looking
always leaping
foot in mouth with every other word
and this
this is us
this is the way things have always been
you take and take and take
until I’m empty
and I give everything
knowing it’s a bad idea
the toxic trade of two codependent hearts
trying to communicate love
in completely different languages
